The Scala dei Turchi is Realmonte's white cliff: a wall of marl that steps down to the sea and looks almost dazzling against the turquoise water. It's 1.8 km from the villa; the beach below it is 1.4 km. Not “a minute away”, as you may read elsewhere: four minutes by car, or a walk.

It's the most famous place in the area, and also the closest to the house. The photo above was taken by drone and gives an idea of how big the cliff is, and of the colour of the sea at its foot.

In short: it's the wonder closest to the villa. Go early in the morning or towards sunset, and check the access rules beforehand.

When to go

The best light is early in the morning and late in the afternoon: the white rock warms to pink and gold, the sea turns deeper and the photos almost take themselves. In the middle of a summer day, though, the sun on the pale rock is strong: a hat, water and sun cream are not a detail.

Out of season the cliff has a quieter charm. The villa is open all year round, and in spring or autumn the walk is well worth it too.

Where to see it from

There are two ways to see it. From below, from the beach, with the white wall towering above you. And from above, from the viewpoints over the coast, where you can see the whole cliff with the two beaches on either side.

What to know before you go

Marl is a soft rock that the wind and the sea wear away year after year. To protect it, and for visitors' safety, access to the cliff has been closed or restricted several times in recent years, sometimes with limited numbers. The rules change from one season to the next: before you go, check the current ones, for example on the Realmonte Pro Loco website, and don't climb where it's forbidden.

Don't take pieces of rock away and don't leave marks on the cliff. That's also how the Scala will stay white for those who come after.

Why it's called that

The name comes from tradition: the story goes that Saracen pirates, whom people on this coast simply called “Turks”, used to land here, sheltered from the wind. The “scala” (stairs) is the rock's natural steps.

You'll find the other beaches near the villa, with their distances one by one, in the article on the beaches a stone's throw from the house. And for a different kind of morning there's the Valley of the Temples, six kilometres away.
